As a
solid companion to the recent critical hit Longford,
Christopher Menaul’s See No Evil – The
Story Of The Moors Murders (2006) actually deals with the infamous killings
that caused scandal, mob crowds and became one of the darkest events in 20th
Century England. You can read more about
the other film at this link:

Whereas
that covers the long legal aftermath, this two-part program shows the events
leading to the horror and insanity, with Maxine Peak convincing as a younger
Myra Hindley and Sean Harris solid as Ian Brady.
The crimes happened from 1963 to 1965 and the teleplay has some good
period touches, but sticks to a study of how this situation played out and does
it with a pacing that is very good, as well as respectful and honest of what
happened.
My only
problem is that the final result does not have the impact it could have and
only has under 140 minutes to really pull all of this off. There is more to be said about this, but for
now, is a respectable attempt to do so.
If you liked Longford, you
should see this. If you have seen
neither, than catch both, starting with this one.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is softer than I would have liked it,
miscredited on the back as “4:3” aka 1.33 X 1.
Though it is made to look dowdy, the softness in this transfer goers
beyond that for whatever reasons, but it is an import and maybe that has
something to do with it. The Dolby
Digital 2.0 Stereo is better with good, clean, clear sound. There are no extras.
