The Cook - Unrated (2007/Anchor Bay – Starz)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Feature: D

Now that the Torture Porn Cycle, long played out, is running out of angles, how about one where the killer wants to literally eat sorority gals?  What if the script makes them as unlikable as possible to not only justify their brutal killing, but that they should be cooked and eaten?  That is the goal of The Cook, an obnoxious, tired sickening, dumb, absolute piece of garbage now on DVD from Anchor Bay.

The cover has the title killer looking like Jim Carrey, but Carrey never stooped to this level and this is so badly directed, edited, acted and produced that it is a new low for straight to video trash.  It is like food poisoning, except you didn’t eat anything.  Skip this by all means!

The anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1 image was shot on video (HD?) and looks poor, with aliasing issues throughout and a generally phony look.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 is weak and 5.1 may have good surrounds at times, but shows how badly dialogue was recorded.  The combination is lame.  Extras include a screen test, brief behind-the-scenes piece and lame audio commentary with the cast and crew.
