Robben Ford – New Morning: The Paris Concert (Inakustik DTS DVD)

The DVD
releases of Larry Carlton and Robben Ford have been some of the best jazz
releases we have seen in about five years and so, it makes total sense that
someone would bring the two of them together for a concert of some sort. The New
Morning: The Paris Concert is the one to do it under the banner Autour Du Blues. For starters, here are some links to the
previous coverage of both:

This is
as good as anything Carlton has on DVD and though I was not happy with some of
the covers (namely track 5) I have to admit that there is a rare, good, unusual
chemistry that is somewhat indescribable, but the kind music livers will
recognize and we do not see enough. That
is enough to put this one on the “take a look” list.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is taped and a little soft here, but is
definitely a nice shoot and we’ll be curious to compare it to a Blu-ray when
one is issued. The DTS 5.1 soundtrack is
better than the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix and even has advantages over the decent
PCM 2.0 16/48 Stereo track. The
combination, especially with the DTS, has some impact. The only extra are the two tracks listed
above.
