The Last Detective – Series Four (Acorn Media)

Picture: C     Sound: B-     Extras: D     Episodes: B+

Based on the Dangerous Davies novel series by author Leslie Thomas, I found The Last Detective to be a damn enjoyable television experience.  It’s a great blend of a British cop show, British comedy, and drama (a more international art form) that provides a consistently enjoyable seventy minute self-contained story.  The show follows Detective Constable “Dangerous” Davies, a cop regarded as mostly laughable by his colleagues and he is, providing quite a few memorable moments at his expense.

Being that I’ve picked up this show at Season 4/Series Four, I can’t comment on the previous three seasons, but starting up now didn’t hurt my enjoyment at all.  However, as far as I can tell, this doesn’t necessarily pick up where anything left off.  The show takes some interesting stylistic techniques, reminiscent of C.S.I., particularly in flashback sequences that help the story unfold.  Ultimately, there’s nothing all that innovative about the show, but still blends in well with the rest of the cop shows out there.

The series is presented in a 1.78 X 1 anamorphically enhanced widescreen format, but never is able to shake the look of British television, something I’ve never been able to get into myself as its look and feel reminds me of 1970’s porno.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound is fine, no real complaints, but was nothing stellar either.  The disc is lacking in extras, containing only cast filmographies, a biography of Leslie Thomas, and an interview with star Peter Davison.

For its premium price, I’m not sure this series would really be worth it, but if you can find it used for a decent price, I’d recommend it.  Future seasons are something I wouldn’t mind watching, that’s for certain.  For previous coverage of the show, try these links:
