Iron Maiden & The New Wave of British Heavy Metal + Aural Amphetamine – Metallica & The Dawn of Thrash (MVD DVD)

Making sure they never miss a music genre, the makers of the Under Review series have put together these unusually long looks at harder rock music with Iron Maiden & The New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Aural Amphetamine – Metallica & The Dawn of Thrash, both available on DVD from Music Video Distributors.  To their credit, these are very thorough, but they can also drag on if you do not like the types of Rock explored or discussed.

From a reference point of view, however, they are as detailed and thorough as any of the other, many entries in this series.  You realize they’re success did not happen overnight and their survival came from being committed to their music and their fans.  No, nether are my favorite group, but both (especially Metallica) are formidable and did more to help Rock music than hurt it, which is why they deserve the credit they get here as the focus of these subgenres of Rock and the cycles that followed.  Now, fans and the curious can see much of it for themselves.

The 1.33 X 1 image on both has letterboxed moments, but picture quality (from a PAL analog video source) is consistent and has limited problems, plus the variance you expect from documentary filmmaking.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo on both is formidable and sounds good, but is obviously not audiophile quality.  Still, it sounds better than similar releases.  Extras include text bios, quizzes and additional interviews on both DVDs, while the Maiden disc adds a featurette The New Wave & Radio 1.
