The Ruth Rendell Mysteries – Set Three (Acorn DVD)

Thus far,
everything I’ve seen that’s been put out by Acorn Media has been of a
consistent good quality, in terms of content at least. While this release
lacked the picture and sound quality of previous releases I’ve seen from them,
such as the enjoyable cop show The Last Detective, The Ruth Rendell
Mysteries proves to be a series of rather enjoyable short stories told
through a series of episodes.
The first
story I sampled, “Going Wrong,” was a
well written, less well acted, terrifically tragic tale, one that I’d expected
to just shrug off, but ended up being rather impressed with. A note, however,
for the unaware (as I was) – Ruth Rendell is an author. The impression I’d gotten from the DVD cover
was that this would be a Murder She
Wrote type of show, but rather it was a series of adaptations of some of
her short stories. That makes it a sort
of anthology series, but as that, it is not bad.
The
picture on this release isn’t what it could be, but the show is apparently ten
years old at this point. The sound is equal to the picture, reflecting a
loss in quality from probably sitting on a shelf for the past decade. The extras provided, a biography of Ruth
Rendell and a filmography of cast members, leave something to be desired. As I said before, this release surprised
me. As such, I can absolutely recommend this set, and I look forward to
future sets from this series. You can
read about the previous sets for more information elsewhere on this site.
