Steve Kilbey Live (Plus 1/MVD DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C     Extras: C-     Concert: C+

I was looking forward to Steve Kilbey’s solo concert on DVD, but the sound is a wreck, but more on that below.  From what I can hear, it sounds like it might have been half decent as he performs:

1)     Providence

2)     Buffalo

3)     Is Your Love In Vain?

4)     Almost With You

5)     Famished

6)     Electric Lash

7)     Civil War Lament

8)     Caroline Says

9)     Mistress

10)  Wolfe

11)  Tristesse

12)  Forever Lasts For Nothing

13)  Don’t Look Back

14)  Under The Milky Way

15)  Hotel Womb

16)  Comedown

17)  Invisible/Medley

18)  One Inch Rock

19)  Just For You

He can sing, play and has good material, but this DVD cannot deliver it well.  Maybe the Blu-ray will fare better.  So what’s wrong?

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is on the soft side and though color can be good, while the Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound is a compressed mess, with the singing and even rare talking very compressed, boxy and narrow.  What happened?  It must be an encoding error or the soundman should be banned from the business.  Four brief clip sections are the only extras.

We’ll save anything about The Church until we get material from them to cover, but this is not a good disc and is best skipped.
