The Doors (1991/Blu-ray/Lionsgate)

Picture: B+     Sound: B+     Extras: C+     Film: B

Oliver Stone’s ever-controversial film on Jim Morrison and The Doors (1991) is finally hitting Blu-ray with most of its extras in tact and a decent presentation.  To read about the film, you can see the text for my coverage of the 15th Anniversary DVD edition at this link:

This new 1080p 2.35 X 1 digital High Definition version is not perfect and shows softness more often than I would have liked, but it is the closest thing to a 35mm presentation that we have seen to date easily after so many substandard DVDs.  Color is consistent and some shots look really good, but Robert Richardson’s work deserves even more.  The DTS 7.1 HD Master Audio (MA) Lossless has some surprisingly good range, especially considering this was originally a 4.1 digital mix in the defunct CDS (Cinema Digital Sound) format, but it also shows its age in parts and only going back to the original music masters could this be fully upgraded to the next level, though music sounds good and is often ambient.

Extras are almost the same, including one trailer (instead of several) and the Stone audio commentary, but only one of the three featurettes is here (Morrison In Paris) while the others (The Doors In L.A., The Road To Excess) are also missing.  We also get he deleted scenes, but not in HD.
