Tom & Jerry Tales – Volume Five (Warner DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C-    Episodes: B-

Though it has not amounted to any big revival, Tom & Jerry Tales has held in there well and is not a bad show, though as one of our fellow writers pointed out, why are these children’s shows not coming out in full seasons instead of volumes like this show?  Well, here is Volume Five and it offers 12 stories, but short ones at that.

For a little background and first impressions, you can read this about our earlier impressions from V. 2:

Obviously, there is still some healthy interest in the characters, but so much more could and should be done.  All someone at Warner/Turner needs to do is find the right, ambitious project to relaunch the characters and bring them up to date, but the longer they wait and consider the early MGM days their peak, the less likely this is to happen.  Restricting it to young children only will bring the same second-place results.

The 1.33 X 1 image is good, clean and colorful, even if it is not spectacular.  Like too many current TV shows, the color is being limited when it does not need to be.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is also fine, without surrounds, but obviously a new recording.  Two trailers for other product are the only extras.
