Wu-Tang Clan – Live At Montreux 2007 (Eagle DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: D     Concert: C+

Despite losing one of their most controversial members, having members with successful outside projects and even being investigated by the FBI, The Wu-Tang Clan marches on, even if it is in a rarer number of circumstances.  Eagle is issuing their Live At Montreux 2007 concert on DVD and Wu-Tang still have their edge.  In my case, though, I only got so much out of it and I liked The Rza’s work in Kill Bill, reviewed on Blu-ray elsewhere on this site.

1)     Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing To #!Wit

2)     Da Mystery Of Chess Boxin

3)     Duel Of The Iron Mic

4)     Fish

5)     Grid Iron Rap

6)     Bring The Pain

7)     It’s Yours

8)     Liquid Swords

9)     Ice Cream

10)  Uzi

11)  One Blood Under W

12)  Do U Really (Thang Thang)

13)  What The Blood Clot

14)  Careful (Click Click)

15)  Protect Ya Neck

16)  Bring Da Ruckus

17)  Tearz

18)  C.R.E.A.M.

19)  Method Man

20)  Reunited

21)  For Heaven’s Sake

22)  Wu-Tang 7th Chamber

23)  Shadowboxin’

24)  Shimmy Shimmy Ya

25)  Brooklyn Zoo

26)  Got Your Money

27)  Cherchez LaGhost

28)  La Rhumba/Black Widow Pt. 2

They manage to get a serious amount of energy and material in 90 minutes, but they have the catalog and talent, but I (not the biggest Hip Hop/Rap fan, admittedly) could not find the kind of synergy I was expecting here that has been in the few such concerts I have appreciated.  However, fans of the group and the music will love this disc and it is now one of the best Rap/Hip Hop DVDs on the market.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is not bad, looking like a late 1080i HD shoot, but it might be early 1080p.  We’ll know when the inevitable Blu-ray arrives but this colorful and decent shoot will not disappoint fans.  The DTS 5.1 mix is very the best track sound mix here and is preferred over the Dolby Digital 5.1 and even decent PCM 2.0 Stereo mixes, but there is something slightly off about the mix where the full soundfield we should be getting is not delivered.  Whether this is an artistic choice or sound error is hard to tell, but I would like to hear the inevitable Blu-ray to find out if it is just this disc.  There are no extras except for the usual paper pullout write-up inside the case Eagle likes to include.
