The Bangles Greatest Hits (Super Audio Compact Disc/SA-CD/SACD/Sony Music)

DSD 2.0 Stereo Sound: B     Music: B-

When The Go-Gos broke up, they left an opening for another all-female Pop-Rock band and with Bananarama played out, The Bangles stepped in and found some interesting success, if uneven during their original run.  This led to the inevitable hits set and Sony Music decided when they were first pushing the Super Audio Compact Disc/SA-CD format, issued the hits set that way.  The Bangles Greatest Hits was original issued in 1990 and sold well, with songs including:

1)     Hero Takes A Fall

2)     Going Down In Liverpool

3)     Manic Monday

4)     If She Knew What She Wants

5)     Walk Like An Egyptian

6)     Walking Down Your Street

7)     Following

8)     Hazy Shade Of Winter

9)     In Your Bedroom

10)  Eternal Flame

11)  Be With You

12)  I’ll Set You Free

13)  Everything I Wanted

14)  Where Were You When I Needed You

Susanna Hoffs no doubt had (and still has) a good singing voice and she even made a solo attempt that did not work out, but the talent is there and you can hear it here as clearly as anything.  The third and fourth song feel more like novelty records with some cutesy gimmicks, but track 10 is one of their best records simply because it could have been a silly, soapy disaster, yet not a false note can be heard and it is one of the last such records to chart by anyone since to work as well speaking volumes about how bad music has been since.

I wanted to cover this as a curiosity to find out if there was more to hear than I had since the band first arrived on the scene and the results were not disappointing, but not spectacular either.

The DSD 2.0 Stereo sound is the sole sound format offered and it can be a little edgy in parts, but otherwise, this is the best these songs have sounded, but it is a shame there is not a 5.1 option since some of these songs (especially Eternal Flame) would really benefit.  The CD’s original CD foldout is also included.
