Rain Shadow – Series One (Acorn Media DVD)

For those unfamiliar with Australian TV, which in America is very likely, Rain Shadow is a TV mini-series broken into six 1-hour episodes and ran during the year 2007 starring Rachel Ward.  The mini-series is about two vets; one is the district vet, while the other is the new incoming assistant vet.  They are in the ‘rain shadow’ land, which is essentially an area of dry land that is blocked from much rain due to the nearby mountain range that pushes the weather away from the ‘shadowed’ region.

The show is OK with decent chemistry, but not a show for everyone, especially if you are not accustomed to shows with a steady, yet slow pace.

Episode List:

The Long Paddocks

You Can’t Eat Scenery

Paringa Rules

Black and White

The Call of the Wild

The Soldier’s Choice

Presented on DVD with a 1.78 X 1 anamorphic transfer the show was shot in HD and looks pretty solid, although there are moments that demonstrate some of the limitations that standard definition DVD present.  Overall the scenery looks solid with nice depth throughout, contrast and colors are never an issue.  It would be interesting to see this show on Blu-ray.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo mix works well, but nothing special going on here as this is a highly dialogue-based show.

Only for the super-curious!
