The Smurfs: Season One – Volume Two (Warner DVD)

Picture: B     Sound: C+     Extras: C+     Episodes: A-

This is Smurf-tastic!  I was just here Smurfing the Smurf and I thought to my Smurf, what the Smurf, when are they going to Smurf another season of The Smurfs?  Well the wait is over; another season (technically second volume) of The Smurfs is now available on DVD.  The Smurfs: Season One – Volume Two features 20 more Smurfs cartoon episodes for both little kiddies and the nostalgically inclined to partake in until their all smurfed out.

The Smurfs show up again on DVD popping in and out of mushroom huts, getting into wacky hi-jinks, and thwarting the evil Gargamel.  Each Smurf has their own specialty whether it is smarts, strength, cooking, cleaning, or whatever these Smurfs have it all.  Now sit back and enjoy the Smurfiness.

The episodes on this 2-Disc set include:

Disc One:

The Magic Egg/Smurfette’s Dancing Shoes/ Super Smurf - The Baby Smurf/ The Fake Smurf - The Paradise Smurf/Sir Smurf/The Purple Smurfs - Haunted Smurf/Sideshow Smurfs

Disc Two:

The Magnifying Mixture - Foul Weather Smurf/A Painter and Poet/The Abominable Snowbeast - Gargamel, The Generous/Now You Smurf’em, Now You Don’t - The Fountain of Smurf/Spelunking Smurfs - A Clockwork Smurf - The Smurfs and the Monkey Tree

The technical features on this 3 apple high set are comparable to the last DVD release with a great picture presentation and a solid sound quality.  The picture is presented in a 1.33 X 1 full screen that continues to have a crisp, clear image with very vibrant colors that highlight the stellar animation from Hanna-Barbera.  The sound is once again presented in a Dolby Digital Mono that is adequate for this release, but much of the time the sound quality is quite flat without a high degree of depth.

There is only one extra feature on this new Smurfs DVD release entitled I Smurf the Smurfs: Memories of the Original Smurfs Era and the Lasting Impact They’ve Made (16:39).  The extra feature is very nice, but not nearly long enough.  The look back at The Smurfs with the help of writers, voice actors, museum directors, and many more is a nice summation of the influence that The Smurfs  had over many in the 80’s and to even today.

Until next time, keep on Smurfin.
