Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis – Live From Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC (Eagle DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Concert: C+

In January 2007, Country Music legend Willie Nelson and Jazz legend Wynton Marsalis teamed up for a concert, focusing on the one common denominator their favored genres have, The Blues.  Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis – Live From Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC is a DVD record of that performance where they played the following:

1)     Rainy Day Blues

2)     Georgia On My Mind

3)     Bright Lights Big City

4)     Basin Street Blues

5)     Caldonia

6)     Night Life

7)     Stardust

8)     My Bucket’s Got A Hole In It

9)     Ain’t Nobody’s Business

10)  Don’t Get Around Much Anymore

11)  That’s All

12)  Down By The Riverside

The performance and musicianship can be top rate, yet there is something about this collaboration that does not gel.  Maybe it is the glut of Blues DVDs or something not clicking here, but this just did not work for me.  It might for fans, but it just does not have the results the two names coming together should have given it.  This should feel and play more like an event, but does not.

The letterboxed 1.78 X 1 image is on the soft side and can have some aliasing issues, but it is more consistent than expected, though trying at times.  The DTS 5.1 mix is the best of the three choices, including Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo mixes, yet the mix is a bit flat in all cases.  A paper pullout with an essay in the DVD case is the only extras.
