David Gilmour – Live In Gdansk (EMI DVD/Sony-Columbia CD Set)

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C     Concert: B-

David Gilmour continues his wave of solo work with appearances on series like Live From Abbey Road and in this new DVD/CD set of Live In Gdansk in which he travels to the famous city in Poland on one of his latest tours.  Though you can get the CD-only set separately, fans will be more inclined to get the set that includes the DVDs.  The music performed in both formats include:

1)     Speak To Me (CD only)

2)     Breathe (CD only)

3)     Time (CD only)

4)     Breathe (reprise; CD only)

5)     Castellorizon

6)     On An Island

7)     The Blue

8)     Red Sky At Night

9)     This Heaven

10)  Then I Close My Eyes

11)  Smile

12)  Take A Breath

13)  A Pocketful Of Stones

14)  Where We Start

15)  Shine On You Crazy Diamond (CD only)

16)  Astronomy Domine

17)  Fat Old Sun (CD only)

18)  High Hopes

19)  Echoes

20)  Wish You Were Here (CD only)

21)  A Great Day For Freedom

22)  Comfortably Numb

Needless to say that the CD only tracks are mostly from Dark Side Of The Moon is unfortunate and will disturb some fans, but it is still a very good concert, though I liked the performance from the Remember That Night concert Sony issued on Blu-ray a little more.  You can read more about that at this link:

The DVD here is anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 and it is a little softer than we wanted it to be, much like the previous concert, so taping is an issue for Gilmour’s performances, though this is not a Blu-ray and is not being issued as such yet.  Color is good, but detail and even depth can be lacking.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is pretty good for the DV D, while the CD’s 16bi/44.1kHz 2.0 Stereo seems to have more of a sonic ceiling than expected, so they are even in this respect.  The only extra is a Gdansk Diary documentary (38 minutes) that is not bad, but I expected a little more considering the room the DVD had left.  Needless to say Gilmour is one a roll and this is not the last show we’re gong to see on any format, but this Gdansk set has more pluses than not and is worth your time.
