Bachelor Man – God’s Gift To Women Edition (2003/Magnolia/Magnet DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Film: C

Digging back into their growing film catalog, Magnolia is reissuing their not-so-hot comedy Bachelor Man in a new edition boring dubbed the God’s Gift To Women Edition and though someone might find this funny, this critic is not among them.  David DeLuise is the title character, explaining what a tough start to life he had, literally as a dumb flashback to his mother’s labor.  Though not mean-spirited, the film walks the misogyny line too often and is a general bore.

Then a woman he is most interested in shows up and it is comic actress Missi Pyle, an underrated, underused and misused actress.  She does her best here, but Director John Putch is clueless on what to do, the script is a repetitious wreck and at 91 minutes, it still seems too long.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is soft and detail-challenged, with dull color and has a generic look with all the digital add-ons to increase the gags.  They also make this cartoon of a film worse.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is not much different from the Dolby 2.0 and the audio shows its age, mostly dialogue-based and flat in character.  Extras include deleted scenes, outtakes, trailer, TV ads and a six-part making-of piece.
