The Best Of Bond… James Bond (2008/Capitol Records DVD/CD Set)

Picture: C     Sound: B-     Extras: B-     Music: B

One of the greatest legacies of the James Bond films have been its music and theme songs, so much so that as movies and especially TV shows have dropped them, they seem more like a Bondian thing than anything else.  Over the years as a promo for the series and its music, Capitol Records has often issued compilations of the theme songs and in chronological order.  The Best Of Bond… James Bond (2008) includes all the theme songs up to the prior film before the one out now.  Here you get:

1)     The James Bond Theme – John Barry Orchestra

2)     From Russia With Love – Matt Monro

3)     Goldfinger – Shirley Bassey

4)     Thunderball – Tom Jones

5)     You Only Live Twice – Nancy Sinatra

6)     On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – John Barry Orchestra

7)     We Have All The Time In The World – Louis Armstrong

8)     Diamonds Are Forever – Shirley Bassey

9)     Live & Let Die – Paul McCartney & Wings

10)  The Man With The Golden Gun – Lulu

11)  Nobody Does It Better (from The Spy Who Loved Me) – Carly Simon

12)  Moonraker – Shirley Bassey

13)  For Your Eyes Only – Sheena Easton

14)  All Time High (from Octopussy) – Rita Coolidge

15)  A View To A Kill – Duran Duran

16)  The Living Daylights – A-Ha

17)  Licence To Kill – Gladys Knight

18)  Goldeneye – Tina Turner

19)  Tomorrow Never Dies – Sheryl Crow

20)  Surrender (end theme to Tomorrow Never Dies) – k.d. lang

21)  The World Is Not Enough – Garbage

22)  Die Another Day – Madonna

23)  You Know My Name (from Casino Royale) – Chris Cornell

24)  BONUS: James Bond Theme – John Arnold

The PCM 16/44.1 2.0 Stereo sound on the CD is decent for the format, sounding on par with the recent series of reissues of some of the soundtracks as upgraded a few years ago.  I was not always happy with the 5.1 versions (even the DTS) within the respective films on the current wave of DVD and now Blu-ray upgrades of the films, so this is a fine set to have if you are a fan and to compare to any of the films you now own on disc.  The PCM 16/48 2.0 Stereo on the DVD is just as good, sounding clear and clean, with Music Videos for tracks 15, 13, 18, 16, 14 and live version of 3 (Shirley Bassey – Live At Royal Albert Hall, 1974, which deserves its own DVD) that is a great bonus.  The Videos can be soft, even when they were filmed, since they were finished on analog videotape, but maybe an upgrade could be done down the line?  You also get The Bond Sound – The Music Of 007 featurette, which is a must-see program.

Besides the bonus track on the CD, extras include the DVD, which we count as such since a single version has been issued.
