Supernatural – The Complete Third Season (Warner Blu-ray)

Taking a trip back to the stranger side of Blu-ray Supernatural: The Complete Third Season returns (this time in high definition) with all the same chills, screams, and oddities; it just looks much better this time.

 

Brothers Sam and Dean continue to battle their way through a world filled with demons and a life full of loss.  But while Sam has made it to Hell and back (literally); Dean’s battle has just begun.  Trading his soul to a Crossroad Demon in exchange for his brother’s, Dean now only has one year to live.  The series becomes a race against time and the twisted as brothers Dean and Sam try to hold back the forces of evil, while not letting go of each other.  The odyssey that is Supernatural is intriguing, warped, and emotional all at the same time.

The technical features on this 3-Disc Blu-ray set are scarily well done.  The picture is presented in 1080p/VC-1 High Definition transfer in a 1.78 X 1 Widescreen that captures the series dim and dreary atmosphere quite well as it heightens the colors and brings a new crispness that was not seen on the series previously.  Better than the series’ atmosphere and scenery presentation is the appearance of the characters’ flesh tones and sharp facial features; giving the series a whole new and deeper look full of solid blacks and texture.  The sound is presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound that fits the fast pace nature of the series, but at times the soundscape is overcrowded and muffled by the over inundation of dialogue, ambient noises, and action sequences.  The sound comes more from the front speakers than the rear, but that is not to say that the rears are absent.  The sound is not wowing by any means with its limited Dolby Digital Track, but it gets the job done for a series that is a fun, guilty pleasure.

 

The extras are the same as those presented on the DVD that pleasantly surprised this reviewer, but once again there are no commentary tracks and the image is a simple standard definition.  Essentially there has been no upgrade as far as special features and the best that Warner Bros. could offer on this Blu-ray release is a Digital copy of all 16 episodes.  Major downer.

 

Though a bit ridiculous at times, like Buffy and Angel before it, let Supernatural be your new guilty pleasure as you dive into the unreal.
