Nickelback – Live At Sturgis 2008 (Roadrunner Records DVD)

Nickelback is a Canadian Rock band that is not bad, but some would consider more commercial or post-Rock to those who feel they are more Pop oriented, like a Bryan Adams.  Formed in 1995, they have survived pretty much in tact and that their biggest hit is “Hero” from the Spider-Man franchise shows how they have been relegated to fans and Rock charts at best.  In 2008, they started working with Jeff “Mutt” Lange (who put Bryan Adams on the map, among others) and Live At Sturgis 2008 is a concert project to go hand in hand with their Dark Horse album.

Songs include:

1)     Animals

2)     Woke Up This Morning

3)     Photograph

4)     Because Of You

5)     Far Away

6)     Never Again

7)     Savin’ Me

8)     Someday

9)     Side Of A Bullet

10)  How You Remind Me

11)  Too Bad

12)  Figured You Out

Like so many bands today, they have some energy, but nothing here really stayed with me including the concert.  Part of that was the performance, no matter how much they put into it, while the other is the way this was recorded and how it plays back.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was shot in High Definition video, but looks weak here with a certain softness despite the good color and consistent image.  The actual shoot is nothing special, but at least it does not ad dumb pseudo-slick editing and discoloration.  The sound is also an issue, offered in four versions.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is predictably old and weak, while the DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes sound veiled, a little harsh and compressed.  Then there is the fourth option, a Dolby SRS 2.0 mix that you can decode for false surrounds, suggesting multi-channel was not thought through for this concert.  All four disappoint on some level.

Extras include the unamusing “Rockstar” Music Video that does not work, stills set to their music, Sturgis 101 Vignette and a behind-the-scenes featurette with the band.  All of this will work for fans, but otherwise, you might want to skip this one.
