The Streets Of San Francisco – Season Two, Volume
Two (1973 – 4/CBS DVD)

As The Streets Of San Francisco moved on
to hit ratings success and critical welcome, the show actually picked up in
energy, spontaneity and chemistry between the leads. By this time, Karl Malden was being spoofed
by Johnny Carson and making a landmark success looking like his character Lt.
Mike Stone in a classic series of credit card ads, while Michael Douglas was
becoming a star in his own right and it also became a magnet for name stars
(like Ida Lupino) while featuring the next big names like Larry Wilcox. Later of CHiPs,
he is not noted in the opening where they name the stars, yet his character is
very prominent.

Though
the 1.33 X 1 color image may have some slight softness and slight inconsistency
between the 12 episodes here, this latest set has the same fine picture and
sound as the previous releases we looked at and color seems even a bit better
here. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono is also
pretty good for its age and the combination is often impressive, showing the
money Quinn Martin and ABC decided to put into the series as it become a bigger
hit. It also reminds us how great even
the simplest drama could be. Our only
complaint once again is that there are no extras, but they have to have
something in the archives, so how about some new time CBS?
