The Odd Couple – The Final Season (Fifth Season/1974 – 5/CBS DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: B

Very rarely is a TV show so good that you hate to see it end or go off the air.  The cases where that applies includes series cancelled before their time (Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Family Guy), cult shows that never got off the ground but were good while they lasted and hits that quit while they are on top and have done al they could do.  One of those rare later cases is the Tony Randall/Jack Klugman version of The Odd Couple, a show so good that it eclipsed the feature film, its very belated & highly unnecessary sequel and a weak revival attempt.

We have covered the whole series, so to start at the beginning, try this link:

All 22 of the 1974-75 Season shows are here, including the Paul Williams episode, the famous Howard Cosell appearance, Roy Clark show, hilarious battle with Richard Dawson howler and the conclusion that wraps things up.  The show was a winner all the way and it is one of the reasons Garry Marshall was the success he became, but everyone benefited and when all is said and done, The Odd Couple is one of TV’s greatest sitcoms and now one of its most underrated.  Hope these DVDs change that.

The 1.33 X 1 image between episodes is clean and colorful moments, with the shows looking better than ever and will make some do double takes at its fine playback, while the Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono is also nice and clean for its age, with the jokes and gags coming through loud and clear.  Sadly, CBS decided on zero extras to round out the complete release of the show, but even that would not stop me from recommending it.
