Superhero Movie – Extended Edition (2008/Genius/Dimension Blu-ray)

Picture: B     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Film: C-

Having already covered this dreadful spoof, which you can read about here, our viewpoint of this film has not changed since that point in time, even with the arrival of the film on Blu-ray. Because of the onslaught of recent with comic book characters making their way to the big screen it only seemed to be a matter of time before someone parodied it.  The result is a mostly unfunny film that gets lost in it’s own spoof.

The good news though is that for fans this edition greatly improves over the standard definition DVD that we previously covered.  The film does not get better despite the enhanced performance here with a sharper, more refined 1.85 X 1 transfer now presented in 1080p.  Contrast levels, color fidelity, and sharpness are now solid and refined, whereas the previous DVD was soft throughout.  The transfer here is far from reference quality, but does get the job done.

Audio is also greatly improved here with a lossless Dolby Digital TrueHD 5.1 mix that is fairly impressive, although it seemed as if the surrounds were less engaging than the front soundstage and the balance appeared to be more front heavy.  Other than this minor flaw, the rest of the mix bodes well for the film.

The extras are perhaps the only real bonus though for most people making the upgrade from the DVD as we have a ton of extras and some of which are exclusive to the Blu-ray.  There is a feature commentary track, which is more formal than funny as some might think, there is alternate and deleted scenes, which offer some new material, there are also two featurettes as well on meeting the cast and the ‘art’ of spoofing as they call it, which is downright ironic.  The films trailer and BD-Live extras are also included, the BD-Live is a fan area with cast & crew, photo gallery, movie clips, and other promotional materials.  Again, for the hardcore fan only!
