Gym Teacher – The Movie (2008/Telefilm/Sony DVD)

Made for Nickelodeon and pushing iCarly star Nathan Cress, the inanely entitled Gym Teacher – The Movie (2008) is a nearly obnoxious comedy about the title character (a wasted Christopher Meloni) who is a former athlete who fell from grace and would rather forget about the past.  Now juggling shallow students and like situations, he is being dragged into a national teacher’s fitness contest.

That all could have made for an interesting TV movie back in the 1970s, but this is miles away from The White Shadow and with the formula phony behavior of the teens here (meeting the safe Nickelodeon criteria), 94 minutes is a very, very long time.  Even Amy Sedaris and David Alan Greer could not break the monotony.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was likely shot in HD and has motion blur and poor color from beginning to end.  The Dolby Digital sound is also on the weak side with an odd imbalance in the mix including compression.  Extras include bloopers, deleted scenes, a lame Music Video, two featurettes and odd Bruce Jenner gag bit that is never funny.
