The Spectacular Spider-Man Volume Two & Volume Three (Sony DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Episodes:  C+

We continue our coverage of The Spectacular Spider-Man in two new volumes; Volume 2 contains episodes 4-6, while Volume 3 contains episodes 7-9.  You can read about our previous coverage here.

Volume 2 features the episodes Market Forces, Competition, and The Invisible Hand and fans will enjoy seeing Spidey take on The Sandman, Shocker, and the Rhino in these episodes.  Volume 3 is a better outing though and fans of the movie franchise will quickly recognize these episodes called Catalysts, Reaction, and The Uncertainly Principle, in particular the villains Green Goblin, Hammerhead, and Dr. Octopus, which would of course be the main themes through the first three movie installments, which you can read about here with our Blu-ray coverage on all three films.

The show works to a certain degree, but will likely only entertain really young children’s minds; the animation is a bit soft overall and gives the show an almost playful look that grows tired.  The 1.78 X 1 anamorphic transfer looks soft too, but demonstrates good color throughout.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is quite good for a TV show of this caliber and is a highlight here for sure.
