Hope & Faith – Season One (Lionsgate DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: D

In one of the phoniest sitcoms you will ever see and hopefully have not seen, Kelly Ripa (who replaced Kathy Lee Gifford with Regis Philbin) and Faith Ford are the childhood friends and title characters in Hope & Faith – Season One from ABC now on DVD from Lionsgate.  It is really, really bad and it will; give neither faith or hope in anything, including TV or sitcoms.  It is some of the worst writing on TV at any time, the acting is awful, the precocious kids are obnoxious beyond belief and someone needs to tell these people the 1980s are over.

The 4 DVDs sport 25 horrendous half-hours from hell and “shallow” is the best word to describe every painful second.  I know $3 bills more authentic than anything about Hope & Faith and that happens to be the money value of the whole series to date.  Avoid like the plague!

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image does not have the best definition, plus has more motion blur than a studio bound production should and carries the flat lighting from bad TV into the HDTV age.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is the same old tired flat sitcom mix as the old monophonic 1980s sitcoms were.  I am surprised how bad it is.  Extras include interviews, actual audio commentaries on some shows and an ironic blooper reel.
