Audrey
Tautou is once again playing another off-her-rocker eccentric who may go to far
in Laetitia Colombani’s He Loves Me, He
Loves Me Not (2002) with some aspirations to be Run Lola Run, but it is not that good and does not try to be. The script breaks up the linear order for
laughs in how she becomes obsessed with a married doctor and wants to be with
him. At first, the interest seems
romantic, but we slowly learn that she is willing to act out her needs for him
in all kinds of ways.
I thought
this was one of her better films by default, but it is ultimately uneven and
only saved by the performances, energy and some humor that actually works. Tautou is at her best when she is not trying
so hard here, something we have seen little of in her career and her “weirdo”
shtick grew tired upon arrival. Fans
will probably love it, but others should proceed with caution and only moderate
expectations.
The anamorphically
enhanced 1.78 x 1 image is softer than a new film ought to be, but color is
consistent and saves the picture from rating lower, though the color can look
blotchy at times. Despite a DTS listing
on the back of the package, the only soundtrack you get here is simple Dolby
Digital 2.0 Stereo that is not bad, but not great either. The only extras are trailers for this and
a few other Umbrella DVD releases.
