The Best Of Star Trek – The Original Series + The Next Generation (CBS DVD)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: C-     Episodes: C

To push a new wave of Star Trek Blu-ray and DVD releases, as well as the 11th feature film release in the series, CBS DVD is issuing two single DVDs for the first two live-action series for those who might not be bonkers for the tales of the U.S.S. Enterprise.  However, The Best Of Star Trek – The Original Series and The Next Generation are rather flimsy, somewhat junky shortcut discs that are not that good despite the choices made and the Original disc is the atrocious digital remasters of the 1960s classic and not the actual episodes.  They include The City On The Edge Of Forever, The Trouble With Tribbles, Balance Of Terror and Amok Time, all in embarrassing versions with digital work that already looks years older than it is.

The far overrated Next Generation (where the first half of the series was spent with no clue on what to do except to be stuck in the Holodeck!) offers the two-part Borg battle with Best Of Both Worlds, Yesterday’s Enterprise (a time travel piece) and The Measure Of A Man where Data’s “humanity” is questioned.  They have dated badly and also seem older than they actually are.  It is also sad to see Roddenberry’s vision slowly slip away, but that is how much more plastic than the 1960s show ever could be.  For diehard fans only!

The 1.33 X 1 image on both are lame, with the digitally enhanced shows looking softened by their digital processing, while the later series has aliasing errors all over the place and is the show that really needed the digital upgrades.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes on both feel phony, forced and have distortion problems throughout.  There rare only three previews on both discs, all the same.
