NFL Greatest Follies – Volume Four (Warner DVD)

The NFL has a sense of humor about itself when it comes to its history and they know that is also good business.  NFL Greatest Follies – Volume Four is the latest of a successful series of such amusing narrated showcases that have been going on for decades.  Fans have been aware of the previous volumes, but for those who are not, even a non-fan can enjoy how funny many of the situations are and footage is.

Running about an hour, we learn about helmet radios, strange plays, problems in the field and other strange goofs you will not necessarily see during regular broadcasts.  Also, even with HDTV, there is still something great about seeing these on film that the best video cannot compete against.

The 1.33 X 1 image is a mix of various film footage that is usually in good shape, in part because the NFL still films all their games and keeps their archive in excellent shape reportedly as seriously as any major Hollywood studio, all in 16mm.  There is still softness depending on the shot and transfer, but looks good for this format.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sometimes goes monophonic if the footage is older, but plays well otherwise.  Extras just add more of the same funny footage.
