Dragonball: Evolution - Z Edition (2009/Fox Blu-ray)

Picture: A-     Sound: B+     Extras: B     Film: B

From the hit action packed manga by Akira Toriyama, Dragonball: Evolution comes alive with the legend of Son-Goku and his quest for the Dragonballs.  Legend said that if one gathers the seven dragonballs, that it would grant one pure wish. The evil Piccolo is gathering the dragonballs to destroy the world.  Goku (Justin Chatwin) must stop Piccolo (James Marsters) by gathering the Dragonballs after the death of his Grandfather.  Along with Bulma (Emmy Russum) a genius inventor, the perverted Master Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat) and Yamcha the thief (Joon Park), Goku trains to become the warrior his grandfather believes he is.
Dragonball: Evolution is the first American live-action movie from the franchise.  With a star cast of characters, get ready for hold on to your seats.  The movie is a retelling of Son Goku in a modern day/semi futuristic world.  Not only is this movie filled with crazy martial arts but sci-fi from Bulma's crazy capsule inventions to the awesome power of the Kamehameha.  Get ready for explosions like never seen before...

The 1080p 2.35 X 1 AVC @ 33.5 MBPS digital High Definition image is very impressive, even when there is digital work, while the DTS-HD Master Audio (MA) lossless 5.1 mix is aggressive with a good soundfield.  It may not be the most memorable mix, but it is on the state-of-the-art side.
As a fan of Dragonball, I must certainly say 'Wow!', being a long time reader/collector of the series I will say the movie certainly carries the spirit of Dragonball with themes such as friendship, training, and victory.  For hardcore fans you will recognize various elements from the manga and anime, I was impressed and amused.  The movie is different in the story takes place in where Son Goku in a high school setting, it tries to encompass Goku's training, chase after the Dragonballs, and battles all in one movie.  Along with the Blu-ray includes many extras including the making of a scene, interview with Justin Chatwin, deleted scenes, gag reel, Goku's workout and game quest, music video, and a digital copy for portable medias.
