The Willie Nelson Special with special Guest Ray Charles (1985/Eagle DVD)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Main Program: C+

Not the biggest fan of Willie Nelson, I have to admit he still has his moments and thanks to several releases by Eagle, I have encountered more Willie than I ever thought I would.  You can see in previous reviews like…

Outlaws & Angels

with Wynton Marsalis Live From Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC

And we also got The Complete Atlantic Sessions

Now comes his 1985 TV special where he teamed up with Soul legend Ray Charles.  This lasts about an hour, features Charles for most of the show and features Nelson at his commercial solo peak.  I thought half the performances were disappointing and the rest adequate.  Charles seems out of his element in some way and Nelson joins him in a way that seems to have limited chemistry.  Completists and fans will be happy this one is out, but others may be underwhelmed despite the legendary status of the stars.

The 1.33 X 1 image is shot in analog NTSC video and really shows its age with haloing, softness and detail limits.  Color is not bad for the format.  There is actually a DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 mix here with a Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo mix unlisted on the back of the case, but the DTS is barley better than the rest and the 5.1 mixes are really stretching the compressed TV sound of the time, which is barely mono.  There are no extras.
