Tinker Bell & The Lost Treasure (2009/Disney Blu-ray/DVD Set)

Picture: B/B-     Sound: B/B-      Extras: C     Film: C

After many decades, the idea that Disney has turned Tinker Bell into a talking franchise character is an interesting choice.  It changes the context of her as magic host to member of the stable of characters that make the company a success.  Of course, the version in Tinker Bell & the Lost Treasure (2009) is computer animated, but this second installment in what aims to be some kind of series is at least child-safe entertainment.

Not that this was a great project (the last one was not that memorable either), but besides the good business sense in doing this, the quality is better than it might be in most cases.  The story (what there is of it) is amusing at best and it is nothing we have not seen before, but Disney has put the time and money into it so it is pleasant and rewatchable for young children, especially young ladies.

Not my favorite Blu-ray or DVD of the year, it is still better than much similar programming we have seen this year and parents could to worse.  Just don’t expect a Pixar original here, but the work is there.

The 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image is a not bad, has good color for what the CG animation offers and best of all, there is no motion blur.  The anamorphically enhanced DVD looks good for the format, but cannot compete with the Blu-ray for overall quality and three-dimensional look.  The DTS-HD Master Audio (MA) 48/24 lossless 5.1 mix is pretty good, but can be on the quiet side because this is being aimed at children and for a change, not trying to hit them over the head with excess sonics.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix on DVD is also not bad, but no match for the DTS on the Blu-ray.

Extras include Deleted Scenes, Magical Guide To Pixie Hollow, Pixie Hollow Comes To Walt Disney World, Scenes You Never Saw and a new Music Video.
