LOST –
The Complete Fifth Season: The Journey Back (2009/ABC/Disney Blu-ray)

On its Complete
Fifth Season, LOST continues its
rating-winning ways and manages to keep fans hooked, but is so far from
whatever worked to begin with that it is pretty much a spoof of itself to
anyone not involved in the beginning.
Yes, the money is there and they promise only one more season, but we’ll
believe it when we see it. My thoughts
on this season are similar to those of the Fourth, which you can read more
about at this link:

This time, the show is starting to look desperate and show
its age. The cast is likely very happy
to be employed and to their credit, keep their enthusiasm going, because they
are the top reason any of this is still even watchable in the least as they
play along to keep the fans happy and make this work the best they can. However, the TV grind has more than caught up
to the show and for soap operas (yes, that is what this is); the effects are
even more fatal. If you must watch the
show, start with the First Season (reviewed elsewhere on this site) and go from
there.
The 1080p 1.85 X 1 digital High Definition image is a
little better-looking than the image on the previously issued seasons (all of
them finally), but not enough to get a higher rating. However, ABC broadcasts could never look this
clear, clean or stable and fans will love that.oweve
While the sound
has been uncompressed PCM on some previous Blu-ray volumes of the show, the
sound here is DTS-HD Master Audio (MA) 48/16 lossless 5.1 sound and it is
pretty good, if not spectacular. The
combination is very watchable for a TV series, but nothing here is demo quality
either.
Extras include BD Live interactive functions and LOST 100
featurette exclusive to this Blu-ray release, plus Bloopers, Deleted Scenes,
audio commentary tracks on select shows and five more featurettes (LOST On Location, Building 23 & Beyond, An
Epic Day With Richard Alpert, Making
Up For LOST Time, Mysteries Of the
Universe: The DHARMA Initiative).
