Blood: The Last
Vampire (2000/Animated Version/Manga/Anchor Bay Blu-ray)
Picture: B Sound: A Extras: C Film: A-
On the
eve of the Vietnam War, there was another war, a secret war, the war between
the humans and the vampires. On the
American Air Force base in Yokota, the victims have been found. All that stands in their way is the secret
undercover agents and Saya, a beautiful but mysterious girl with her sword...
the last of the vampires. She
infiltrates the base and must find them before they disappear again, before
another corpse shows up...
This is a
story of vampires that secretly hide and prey on humans, and the secret agents
who hunt them. Set in the past and kept
in the dark, Saya and the vampires dance with one another in the night striking
swiftly, silently and deadly. The night
comes and so do the things of the dark, like an unending nightmare... it
becomes hard to tell who is the monster, these vampires or how Saya dispatches
them. All this is witnessed by a simple
school nurse, the blood, the terror, and the horror how it is hidden from the
rest of the world. Who is Saya
really...?
Based on the manga Blood: The Last Vampire and brought back in high definition on
this fine Blu-ray, comes a fine tale of blood and terror. If you like anime, vampires, or horror then
this film you do not want to miss. Most
of the film is set at night or has a grayish cast, giving a both senses of the
past and foreboding dangers, each turn, each shadow seems to hide something,
and when it finally looks back... it is already too late. The film pays a lot of attention to the
details, clothing, machines, small objects of the time period making the film
all the richer. Not much is told about
main character Saya herself nor of the vampires she hunts (unless you read the
manga), but rather hints she isn't quite human either, adding all the more to
her mystery. During the final scene
everything recounted, but like the morning sun banishes the night, one can't
help but wonder when night falls what will appear?
The 1080p
1.85 X 1 digital High Definition image looks good for its age, but some of the
animation shows its age and the transfer is not as vivid as it could be on a
consistent basis. The PCM 2.0 Stereo is
pretty good and purists may like that selection over the DTS-HD MA (Master
Audio) lossless 5.1 mix, but both are better than the film has ever sounded
before. Extras include The Making of Blood: The Last Vampire
and a digital data version with original trailers.
