Mannix – The Third Season (1969 – 1970/CBS DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: B

By its Third Season, Mannix found itself being the show most people remember it being.  Gail Fisher had finally joined the cast as Peggy, Mannix’s secretary and while the show remained as action-filled as ever, it grew and was as smart as ever.  To see how the show started, try this link:

Though I did not remember this, Robert Reed was added as a police lieutenant and in one show, Brady Bunch co-star Maureen McCormick shows up as his attacked daughter!  Other guest stars this season include Georg Stanford Brown, Virginia Gregg, Victor Jory, Vera Miles, Robert Conrad, Lee Meriwether, Barbara Bosson, Logan Ramsey, Ramon Bieri, Regis Cordic, Larry Linville, Edd Byrnes, Skip Homeier, Angle Tompkins, Frank Campenella, Yvonne Craig, Anthony Eisley, Susan Howard, Gene Raymond, Anita Louise, Bert Freed, Percy Rodriguez, Scott Brady, Jan Merlin, Diane McBain, Linda Marsh, Mike Farrell, Robert Lansing, Jessica Walter, Loretta Swit, Pamelyn Ferdin, Woodrow Parfrey, Dana Elcar, Van Williams, Hugh Beaumont, Michael Conrad, Barbara Rhodes, Gordon Jump and Pamela Bellwood.

Again, the show was accused of being too violent, but it is really just intense action that was on the cutting edge for TV of the time and seems to be more that competitive with similar TV today.  Yes, some parts of the fight scenes can be unintentionally funny, but when they are not, this is impressive for its time.  Mike Connors settled nicely in the role and it is no wonder the show was a hit and deservedly so.  Nice to have it back on DVD.

The full color 1.33 X 1 filmed image and Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono are as clean, clear and consistent as they had been with the first set, with only some limits, variations and flaws that are to be expected for an older such show.  All the more reason this should be a candidate for Blu-ray.  Color can be impressive at times too.  There are no extras.
