Dante’s Inferno – An Animated Epic (2009/Anchor Bay Blu-ray)

The latest interpretation of Dante’s Inferno is an animated one and we have already covered this new version on DVD.  If you have not heard about it, try this link:

Our animation critic was very impressed with this work, while I found it predictable, though ambitious.  It is the same old demonology tale with its Christo/Judao approach, but I also noticed that as compared to animated works from the likes of Ralph Bakshi and the Heavy Metal gang, this one had its violence, but that was not as graphic and the nudity was surprisingly censored.  Like Heavy Metal, this has multiple directors and the works do not always gel.  It will be a curio for sure, but only diehard animation fans will care the most.

The 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image looks good and better than the DVD, but the style of using softer images (an Animé legacy) holds the quality back by being done to the point of overkill.  Too bad, because when this is not done, the image can look very sharp and clear.  How amazing it would have been if the whole thing looked that good throughout.  The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless mix sounds better than the DVD’s Dolby Digital mix, but is not a spectacular improvement either.

Extras are the same as the DVD: Animatics and a Game Trailer.
