Storm Chasers – The Complete Third Season (2009/Discovery Channel/Vivendi DVD Set)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Episodes: C+

Who is nuts enough to drive into a storm that could kill them?  Well, it turns out plenty of people find this a thrill and in some cases, it is a professional job as the more trained professionals tape and even film the events while recording them on various electronic, scientific instrumentations.  Storm Chasers is a “reality TV” series that overplays its hand with moments of bad acting, but is a Discovery Channel hit and The Complete Third Season is now on DVD.

Consisting of only eight hour-long shows, they (and the mistakes the participants tend to make) blend with each other probably more than they should, but after the overrated hit film Twister, you had better be a big fan of this kind of thing or you will get bored quickly.  There are some more interesting moments than expected (including IMAX filming that is not as easy as it should be) so fans will not be disappointed and others will not be totally bored, but I can see why the seasons are so short.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is shot in High Definition video and seems to be slightly darker than it should be either because of the transfer, the format or maybe even some manipulation.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is simple and has some location audio issues, but is fairly good throughout.  Extras include Webisodes and Deleted Scenes.
