Shinjuku Incident (2009/Sony DVD)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Feature: D

No Martial Arts star is more overrated than Jackie Chan.  He filled in the void Bruce Lee left in the worst way, has dozens of bad films for every watchable one he makes and no matter how good his moves are, his moves towards good scripts and films would are the total opposite, making him the cinematic equivalent of Enron.  Now, he is back with a bad drama called Shinjuku Incident and WOW, is it bad!

This formulaic and very LONG 120 minutes is about Chan as part of a group of illegal immigrants who must deal with trouble at every turn, but when it get violent and people start to lose body parts, it only gets worse… in all kinds of ways.  I never bought this for a minute, Chan looks bored beyond belief and I was even more so than he ever could be.  For die hard fans of Chan only, this is every cliché about oppressed newcomers you could imagine done with zero energy and is quickly forgotten.  See it at your own risk.

The anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1 image was shot in Super 35mm film format and is not that detailed or good looking, nor is it framed well.  The Dolby Digital Chinese 5.1 mix is weak, dialogue-based and not well recorded.  The combination is underwhelming and I doubt a Blu-ray version would help matters.  Extras include scene select commentary by Chan and a making of featurette, both of which are as dull as the film.
