Hollywood Legends – Leading Ladies (Series Box)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: B

A compilation of episodes from an old series produced for VHS and even TV distribution, Hollywood Legends compiled all kind of facts, stills, bits, theatrical film trailers and any other footage to create profiles on key people and films in the business.  We have already looked at the Couples and Rivals sets and now take a look at a five-DVD set called Leading Ladies.

The only thing that holds back the 1.33 X 1 presentations are the age of the NTSC-originated sources.  If it was not for that, the content would deserve a higher rating and it would not surprise me if these were upgraded in the near future.  All 50 (yes, 50!) programs hold up very well, though many of the subjects are still around and a few others left us since their programs folded.  The great lineup includes:

Disc One

  1. Gloria Swanson
  2. Greta Garbo
  3. Marlene Dietrich
  4. Jean Harlow
  5. Mae West
  6. Claudette Colbert
  7. Myrna Loy
  8. Ginger Rogers
  9. Bette Davis
  10.  Joan Crawford

Disc Two

  1. Katharine Hepburn
  2. Loretta Young
  3. Olivia De Havilland
  4. Barbara Stanwyck
  5. Rita Hayworth
  6. Judy Garland
  7. Vivien Leigh
  8. Ingrid Bergman
  9. Betty Grable
  10.  Lana Turner

Disc Three

  1. Elizabeth Taylor
  2. Lauren Bacall
  3. Lena Horne
  4. Ava Gardner
  5. Dorothy Dandridge
  6. Jane Russell
  7. Cyd Charisse
  8. Audrey Hepburn
  9. Debbie Reynolds
  10.  Grace Kelly

Disc Four

  1. Doris Day
  2. Marilyn Monroe
  3. Kim Novak
  4. Sophia Loren
  5. Natalie Wood
  6. Leslie Caron
  7. Jayne Mansfield
  8. Joanne Woodward
  9. Lee Remick
  10.  Janet Leigh

Disc Five

  1. Brigitte Bardot
  2. Shirley MacLaine
  3. Julie Andrews
  4. Jane Fonda
  5. Faye Dunaway
  6. Barbra Streisand
  7. Jodie Foster
  8. Michelle Pfeiffer
  9. Kathleen Turner
  10.  Kim Basinger

The mix of footage is nicely edited and the best aspect of all of them is that they say and show things the vast majority of DVD supplements and other documentary and featurette programming would never dare begin to discuss.  This is why it is such a must-see set.  There is also a male star companion set, though we could not cover it since our copy has pressing errors.  There are no extras either, but we think you will find this so loaded with goodies, that you’ll barely notice the difference.
