Celtic Tides – A Musical Odyssey (MPI)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Documentary: C+

In the midst of a revival of Irish music, several concerts and special interest titles were produced to take advantage.  Celtic Tides – A Musical Odyssey (2000) is one of the more basic shows, a documentary with music moments trying to explain the traditional music to a new generation.  That includes some explanations of the culture itself.

13 music moments include Clannad and The Chieftans, but the nearly 50 minutes can only make room for so much and the show can only deliver so much in that time.  It is a good, basic primer on the subject and the music chosen is not bad, but this subject demands a mini-series documentary program and parallel audiophile release.

The 1.33 X 1 image was shot on analog PAL video and is second-generation, with color that is not as vivid as PAL should be, but the copy is at least clean.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is simple at best with no surrounds and is fairly good for its age.  There are no extras.
