Lost In The Grand Canyon (American Experience/WGBH)

Lost In The Grand Canyon is the kind of interesting installments of American Experience that has a simple title, but you know will be far more relevant than you’d expect.  That is except for regular viewers.  Here, we get the tale of John Wesley Powell, who believed in the value of The Grand Canyon when it was being ignored by everyone else.

He risked it all to see it, show it and what began as a simple trip turned into much more.  Lasting about an hour, we hear about the 35-year-old Civil War hero took the “go West” edict and proved that it was more than barren.  That any land could ever be considered so unaddressable that it would be ignored is unthinkable today, but Powell risked it all and sadly, his priceless contribution remains legendary while he stays unknown.  That should change.

The 1.78 X 1 image is likely sourced from an HD source, but this is not anamorphically enhanced, is hard to tell and suffers by being merely letterboxed.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is simple and has no major surrounds.  A DVD-ROM section for printable educational materials is the only major extra.
